AIMIM Expels Hyderabad MLC Mirza Rahmat Baig Over Misconduct Allegations
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen on Saturday expelled MLC Mirza Rahmat Baig from the party with immediate effect and directed him to resign from the Telangana Legislative Council, amid allegations of sexual misconduct involving a minor.
Baig represents the Hyderabad local authorities' constituency in the state legislative council and has nearly three years remaining in his term. In an announcement on the party's X handle, AIMIM joint secretary SA Hussain Anwar stated that Baig had been expelled with immediate effect and directed him to immediately submit his resignation to the chairman of the legislative council.
The party has not formally disclosed the specific reasons for the expulsion or clarified whether a show-cause notice was served beforehand. Baig could not be reached for comment as he is reportedly on an Umrah pilgrimage, and his phone remained out of coverage.
Legislative council chairperson Gutha Sukender Reddy confirmed that he had not received any resignation letter from the MLC. He noted that while some AIMIM leaders indicated they would meet him on Friday evening, they did not do so.
The expulsion came two days after Baig approached the cyber crime police in Hyderabad, alleging that unidentified individuals were blackmailing and threatening him for money with claims of releasing deepfake and morphed media. Based on his complaint, police registered a case under sections 308 (extortion) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police stated that no official complaint regarding sexual misconduct had been lodged against the MLC. A senior police officer noted that authorities have not received any formal report from a victim, nor had any circulating videos been brought to their official notice.
Unverified social media claims suggested that Baig had been confronted, assaulted by a group of youths, and recorded on video, with footage allegedly sent to AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi prior to the expulsion.
The development has triggered sharp political reactions. BJP state president N Ramchander Rao described the allegations of sexual harassment of a minor as extremely serious and demanded a comprehensive probe. He questioned the silence of the Congress and BRS, both of which had supported Baig during his council election, while BJP chief spokesperson NV Subhash demanded a court-monitored investigation or a CBI inquiry into the matter.
