Two Migrant Workers Killed in Seven-Storey Building Collapse in Gachibowli

An illegally constructed seven-storey apartment collapsed on Saturday in Anjaiah Nagar, Gachibowli, killing two migrant workers and shaking the residential area.

Anjaiah Nagar, once a quiet residential pocket in Hyderabad, has evolved into a central hub of affordable hostels and paying guest accommodations. The area primarily caters to the migrant workforce employed across the IT corridor's multinational IT and ITES companies, commercial establishments, malls, and multiplexes.

The locality is situated within a 1 km to 5 km radius of major employment hubs, including Cyber Towers, IKEA, Tech Mahindra, and the Financial District. Because buildings in the area carved out small sharing spaces, it became a preferred destination for workers arriving from other districts and states.

According to local residents, the hostels accommodate students as well as employees working as housekeeping staff, sales personnel, and migrant labourers. Most of these accommodations offer affordable pricing and include dinner for occupants.

The settlement was originally named after former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister T Anjaiah, who allotted plots of government land measuring between 50 and 100 square yards to poor families during his tenure. A local builder noted that these plots were later regularised during the tenure of Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy under the building regularisation scheme.
