Two Hyderabad Residents Among Five Drowned in Tungabhadra River at Mantralayam

A tragic drowning incident at Mantralayam in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district claimed the lives of five individuals, including two residents of Hyderabad, on Saturday, May 30, 2026. The victims had gone to the River Tungabhadra to take a holy dip following a religious ceremony when the accident occurred.
The two victims from Hyderabad have been identified as five-year-old Yuvan Chandra and 35-year-old Satish. The other three deceased individuals have been identified as Raghavendra, aged 25, and Dhanush, aged 23, both of whom were local residents of Mantralayam, and Sandhya, aged 22, who was a resident of Uraavakonda.
Amidst the tragedy, one member of the group managed to survive. Aparna, a resident of Adoni, was able to escape from drowning in the river.
The victims had traveled to the town of Mantralayam to visit their relatives. The primary purpose of their visit was to participate in a Satyanarayana Swamy pooja that was being hosted at the home of these relatives. After the conclusion of the religious pooja, the group decided to proceed to the nearby River Tungabhadra to take a traditional holy dip as part of their rituals.
The excursion turned into a disaster when the group entered the river waters. The five individuals drowned after they failed to properly assess the depth of the River Tungabhadra before stepping into the water.
As soon as the local authorities and emergency services received information regarding the drowning incident, police officers and other administrative officials rushed to the spot along the riverbank in Mantralayam. In an effort to locate the missing individuals, the local administration immediately deployed a team of expert swimmers to the site. These swimmers were tasked with conducting search operations in the river waters to trace the bodies of the five individuals who drowned.
