Psychological thriller Mareechika starring Anupama Parameswaran opens in Telangana

The Telugu psychological thriller film Mareechika, starring Anupama Parameswaran, Regena Cassandrra, and Viraj Ashwin, officially released in theatres across Telangana on May 29, 2026. Directed by Satish Kasetty, the movie attempted a unique blend of romance, mystery, and psychological drama, but struggled to maintain momentum due to a slow-paced narrative.

The film's plot follows Venkatalaxmi, played by Anupama Parameswaran, a college student who deeply adores Sanju, played by Viraj Ashwin. Sanju, the son of a local corporator, chooses an independent life running a coffee shop. Though Venkatalaxmi never confesses her feelings, Sanju eventually marries her NRI friend Mareechika, played by Regena Cassandrra. The story takes a dramatic turn when Mareechika kills Sanju, leading Venkatalaxmi to seek help from the police to uncover the truth behind the murder.

Produced by Rajiv Chilaka and Meghhaa Chilakka, the film features a technical crew including legendary music director Ilaiyaraaja, cinematographer Arvind Kannabiran, and editor Junaid Siddiqui.

While the film's core concept was praised for its ambition—drawing thematic comparisons to the psychological film One: Nenokkadine—the execution fell short for many viewers. The first half of the movie moved at a sluggish pace, making it difficult for audiences to stay engaged despite the critical setup of the plot.

The second half attempted to resolve the central mystery but faced criticism for its depiction of the police investigation, which was described as poorly handled. However, the final act and the interval block managed to generate engagement, particularly a late-stage sequence featuring actor Ajay Ghosh alongside Regina and Anupama.

The lead actors delivered neat performances, with Regena fitting her NRI character and Anupama portraying her innocent role well. Ultimately, the film's ambitious psychological premise was weighed down by its complicated and slow-paced narration.
