Osmania University and JNTU-H Plan Four-Year Evening Engineering Courses

HYDERABAD — Osmania University and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad announced on May 30, 2026, plans to extend their evening BE and BTech programmes for working professionals from three to four years starting this academic year. The decision aims to reduce academic pressure and improve work-study balance for students who are balancing employment with higher education.

The extension comes after representations from working professionals who requested more time to balance their professional and academic commitments. Under the new structure, the number of subjects per semester is expected to be reduced from four to three. However, there will be no change to the fee structure of these programmes.

Currently, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) mandates a minimum of three years for working professionals to complete their undergraduate engineering degree. The evening programmes are designed for diploma holders in engineering who are admitted directly into the second year of the undergraduate course. Classes are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and throughout the day on weekends.

Along with the extended duration, the universities are introducing a new entrance examination for admissions starting this academic year. The exam will be an OMR-based, 100-mark test modeled after the Telangana Engineering Common Entrance Test (TG ECET). It will feature 90 percent questions from the candidate's respective engineering subject and 10 percent from mathematics.

Osmania University is expected to issue an official admission notification in about a week. Approximately 500 seats are projected to be available for the upcoming academic year across 11 participating colleges.

These institutions include the Osmania University College of Engineering, Abdul Kalam Institute of Technological Sciences, AnuBose Institute of Technology, Jayaprakash Narayan College of Engineering, MGIT, Siddhartha Institute of Engineering and Technology, St Peter’s Engineering College, VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology, MVSR, Methodist College of Engineering and Technology, and Stanley College of Engineering and Technology for Women.

The evening courses are offered in several disciplines, including civil engineering, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, mechanical engineering, and metallurgical engineering.
