Cyclone Murasu to Trigger Heavy Rains Across Hyderabad and Telangana

Cyclone Murasu to Trigger Heavy Rains Across Hyderabad and Telangana

Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana are bracing for multiple days of heavy rain and squally weather after a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into Cyclonic Storm Murasu on Sunday, November 1. According to the India Meteorological Department, the weather system is expected to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm before crossing the south Andhra Pradesh coast.

Latest bulletins and meteorological satellite tracking from the IMD in New Delhi indicate that Cyclone Murasu will make landfall between Nellore and Narsapur by the morning of November 3. The severe cyclonic storm is projected to pack wind speeds of up to 120 kmph as it moves inland.

While the cyclone marches toward the coastline, its large cloud mass is already extending into interior regions, setting off a multi-day wet spell in Telangana. IMD Hyderabad announced in a morning rainfall alert that rains would begin on Sunday and gradually intensify toward the middle of the week.

For Sunday, November 1, IMD Hyderabad forecast that several parts of Telangana would experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty squalls. Squally conditions are expected to persist across the state as the storm edges closer to the eastern seaboard.

Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for Monday and Tuesday across eastern and southern districts of Telangana. The affected areas include Khammam, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad, Suryapet, Nalgonda, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri.

In the Hyderabad capital region and adjoining districts, including Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy, the weather agency forecast steady, overcast skies alongside intermittent light to moderate spells of rain and gusty surface winds over the next few days.

The wet conditions across the state are expected to gradually taper off on Wednesday into localised thunderstorm activity, as the cyclonic system weakens into a depression following landfall.
