Anupama Parameswaran Film Mareechika Fails to Hold Attention Upon Release

The Telugu psychological thriller film Mareechika, starring Anupama Parameswaran, Regina Cassandra, and Viraj Ashwin, released in theatres on May 29, 2026. Directed by Satish Kasetty, the film attempted to deliver a unique mystery-romance but met with a mixed-to-negative critical reception due to its slow pace and underwhelming narration.

The story revolves around Venkatalaxmi, played by Anupama Parameswaran, a college student who harbors deep, unconfessed feelings for Sanju, played by Viraj Ashwin. Sanju is the son of a local corporator who chooses to run a coffee shop to maintain his independence. Venkatalaxmi's life is upended when she befriends an NRI woman named Mareechika, played by Regina Cassandra, who subsequently marries Sanju. The plot takes a dark turn when Mareechika kills Sanju, forcing Venkatalaxmi to seek help from the police to uncover the truth behind the murder.

Produced by Rajiv Chilaka and Meghhaa Chilakka, the film features music composed by Ilaiyaraaja, cinematography by Arvind Kannabiran, and editing by Junaid Siddiqui.

While the film was praised for its ambitious concept—blending psychological, romantic, and mystery elements in a manner similar to One: Nenokkadine—the execution fell short. The lead actors received positive marks for their performances, with Cassandra fitting the NRI role, Parameswaran impressing in her innocent portrayal, and Ashwin playing a dapper lead. The final act and an engaging sequence featuring actor Ajay Ghosh also provided some late entertainment and humor.

However, the film struggled with pacing issues. The first half moved at a very slow pace, failing to engage the audience despite being crucial for connecting the plot's dots later on. Critics noted that while the second half attempted to untangle the mystery, the complicated narration caused confusion. Additionally, the poorly written police investigation scene further weakened the film's overall impact, leaving viewers disappointed with the execution of an otherwise good concept.
