Telangana Average Groundwater Level Stood at 7.87 Metres in August

The average groundwater level across Telangana stood at 7.87 metres below ground level (m bgl) during August 2026, according to monitoring data released by the Telangana Ground Water Department. The assessment was conducted using 1,771 piezometer stations covering mandals across all 33 districts of the state.

Water levels varied significantly by region, ranging from 3.48 m bgl in Adilabad to 12.12 m bgl in Medchal Malkajgiri. Out of the 33 districts, 23 recorded average water levels between 5 and 10 m bgl, while the remaining 10 districts recorded depths between 10 and 15 m bgl.

On a month-on-month basis, the state recorded a net average rise of 1.61 metres in groundwater levels during the second fortnight of August 2026 compared to the second fortnight of July 2026. Water level improvements were recorded in 27 districts, led by Kamareddy with a 4.65-metre rise, while Jogulamba Gadwal saw a 0.34-metre rise. Conversely, six districts experienced declines ranging from 0.06 metres in Wanaparthy to 0.82 metres in Nalgonda.

However, year-on-year data revealed a net average decline of 2.09 metres compared to August 2025. Groundwater levels fell in 30 districts, with Hyderabad recording the steepest decline of 5.76 metres, while Kamareddy saw a drop of 0.12 metres. Only three districts recorded an annual rise, ranging from negligible improvement in Siddipet to 0.92 metres in Medak.

The department noted that during the 2026-27 water year up to August 31, 2026, Telangana received 474 mm of rainfall against the normal average of 574 mm, marking a 17 per cent deficit. District-level rainfall ranged from 202 mm in Jogulamba Gadwal to 836 mm in Mulugu. Across the state, 16 districts recorded normal rainfall while 17 districts registered deficit rainfall.
