Skyroot Aerospace Launches Lotus Diamond Cosmic Bloom Into Orbit on Vikram-1

In July 2026, Hyderabad-headquartered private space enterprise Skyroot Aerospace carried 'Cosmic Bloom'—a lotus-shaped replica of a lab-grown diamond—into Earth's orbit during the historic launch of its Vikram-1 rocket mission.

The orbital creation was developed through a collaboration between Skyroot Aerospace and Bengaluru-based Cosmos Diamonds. Conceived by jewellery designer and National Institute of Design graduate Sanjana T., the project was directly inspired by the classic nursery rhyme line "like a diamond in the sky."

The partnership originated nearly a year before the mission, when Sanjana met Skyroot Aerospace co-founder Pawan K. Chandana at a business gathering. During their initial discussions on sustainable lab-grown gems and private space technology, the two founders discussed turning the familiar childhood poem into reality.

The team spent months deliberating on a design that would serve as a message from India to the world. They ultimately selected the lotus, India's national flower, owing to its deep presence across Indian art, architecture, and spiritual traditions, where it is associated with purity, resilience, and wisdom.

In addition to its cultural significance, the lotus motif provided a functional design advantage for space operations. Because camera positioning in orbit can be unpredictable, the lotus was chosen because its multi-directional geometry looks consistent from any viewing angle.

The diamond piece was conceived, designed, and crafted across facilities in Bengaluru and Surat, the central hub for India's lab-grown diamond industry. Lab-grown diamonds share identical physical and optical traits with mined diamonds while being manufactured through advanced technological processes.

Following the orbital deployment, onboard cameras captured sunlight passing through the diamond during Vikram-1's very first sunrise in Earth orbit. Chandana shared the milestone on July 25, 2026, noting that the precise sun alignment illuminated the lotus motif against the backdrop of space.
