RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Speaks on Marriage and Modernity in Hyderabad

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat addressed an event on 'contemporary motherhood' in Hyderabad on Sunday, July 26, 2026, where he described marriage as a discipline that instils dharma while terming live-in relationships a blind imitation of Western culture. Speaking at the gathering organised by Vishwa Mangalya Sabha, the RSS leader shared his views on traditional social institutions, changing cultural practices, the younger generation, and the place of LGBTQ individuals in society.

During his speech, Bhagwat highlighted the institution of marriage as a discipline designed to foster dharma. Contrasting marriage with live-in relationships, he characterised the latter as an alternative driven by a modern desire for happiness without taking on responsibilities. He remarked that under such arrangements, individuals choose to stay together only when desired and part ways when it is no longer wanted, leaving no obligations behind. He urged people to look around the world to observe the consequences of such arrangements, describing live-in relationships as social degradation and a blind imitation of Western culture.

At the same time, the RSS chief clarified that modernity is also needed, noting that changing with the times is an established rule within the country's traditions. While welcoming true modernity, he cautioned against replacing long-standing cultural values with uncritical imitation.

Speaking about the younger demographic, Bhagwat stated that Generation Z is imitative and emotional and does not think with a calm mind. However, he noted that what comes across to them as genuine successfully appeals to them.

Addressing social inclusion, Bhagwat emphasised that LGBTQ individuals are a part of society and stated that they should not be looked down upon.

To address family matters, Bhagwat favoured the adoption of mobile phone discipline by parents. He stressed the importance of active conversation among family members to answer the questions of new generation children and to address various family-related issues effectively.
