Probe Into Bolarum Military Arms Theft Focuses on Insider Role, Honey Trap

Investigators looking into the theft of firearms and ammunition from the Madras Regiment establishment in Bolarum are focusing on an alleged insider connection and a possible honey trap operation. The probe is being conducted jointly by Army Intelligence and the Bolarum police.

Preliminary verification revealed that four AK-203 assault rifles, seven 9mm pistols, and one INSAS rifle are missing from the armoury. In addition to the twelve weapons, hundreds of rounds of ammunition compatible with the stolen firearms were also taken from the facility.

The incident came to light during a routine inspection on August 31, when military officials discovered broken locks and damaged ammunition boxes. No suspicious noise had been reported during the suspected break-in, and investigators are examining whether heavy rain and thunder at the time helped conceal the activity.

Authorities suspect the perpetrators possessed detailed knowledge of the military installation, including the layout of the armoury, weapon storage arrangements, and the practice of storing ammunition separately. The selective removal of specific firearms along with their compatible ammunition has further pointed inquiry toward insider involvement.

As part of the investigation, officials are scrutinising the social media accounts, communications, and financial records of military personnel and contract workers. They are examining whether anyone was targeted through fake identities in a honey trap operation to extract sensitive information or facilitate the theft.

Investigators are also reviewing stock registers, access records, and duty rosters to determine whether the weapons and ammunition were taken during a single break-in or removed gradually over time. The investigation remains focused on identifying individuals who had access to the restricted facility, verifying if insider assistance was provided, and tracing whether the stolen arms have been handed over to outside parties.
