NMC and Health Ministry Bar Unproven Stem Cell Treatments in Hyderabad
The National Medical Commission and the Union Health Ministry have issued fresh guidelines barring private hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and doctors in Hyderabad and across the country from marketing and administering unproven stem cell therapies as standard treatments. The central health regulatory authorities warned patients and families against seeking unverified cellular treatments for conditions including Autism Spectrum Disorder, spinal cord injuries, cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.
Under the newly issued directive, medical practitioners and health facilities are strictly prohibited from offering stem cell therapy as a routine commercial treatment for any disease outside a narrow, government-approved list. The advisory clarified that using stem cells for unapproved healthcare conditions outside a strictly monitored research setting lacks scientific backing and will now be treated as professional misconduct.
Routine clinical use of stem cells has been legally restricted exclusively to approved conditions. According to the guidelines, these permitted treatments are primarily confined to certain blood disorders, specific leukemias and lymphomas, and select diseases of the bone marrow or immune system. Outside these narrow parameters, private clinics and hospitals can no longer promote or administer stem cell therapies as standard medical care.
The regulatory framework also sets strict boundaries for legitimate scientific study. Under current protocols, stem cell research can only take place through approved clinical trials that strictly comply with ethical standards. The advisory noted that these clinical trials mandate free treatment and necessary safety provisions for participants, explicitly barring profit-driven commercial packages.
Doctors and medical institutions found violating the rules face severe disciplinary consequences. The Union Health Ministry advisory stated that penalties can include formal inquiries conducted by State Medical Councils, heavy financial fines, and the complete removal of a practitioner’s name from the official medical register.
Following the announcement, senior doctors in Hyderabad and members of the State Medical Council urged patients, caregivers, and families navigating serious illnesses to stay alert and avoid private clinics promising unproven cellular cures.
