Niteesh Pandey performs solo play Indian Society Naked in Front of You at Lamakaan
Writer and performer Niteesh Pandey staged his solo literary theatre performance, 'Indian Society Naked in Front of You', at Lamakaan in Hyderabad on Sunday evening. The interactive show blended storytelling, poetry, and audience participation to explore the contradictions of modern India and prompt viewers to reflect on collective societal habits.
The performance functioned less like a conventional play and more like an intimate conversation. Pandey utilized everyday observations, ranging from traffic behaviour and family dynamics to social habits and civic indifference, to draw laughs from the crowd before transitioning those moments into deeper introspective questions.
According to Pandey, the provocative title of the play was inspired by daily observations of the news, his surroundings, and the general direction of society. He emphasized that the production was not designed to point fingers at specific individuals, but rather to reflect on collective behaviors, such as shrinking attention spans, changing ambitions, shifting tastes, and the pretence that everything is fine.
Poetry served as the emotional core of the production. Pandey noted that while the anecdotes and narratives were easily drawn from daily life, he spent the most time crafting simple, natural, and playful verses to carry a more lasting meaning.
The performance also relied heavily on audience participation to shape its rhythm. Pandey stated that because the audience drives the performance, the staging in Hyderabad took on its own unique nuances compared to how the show might unfold in cities like Mumbai or Delhi.
Pandey also highlighted a growing concern regarding society's tendency to detach from local and national realities. He expressed that people often become spectators to their own reality, moving quickly between trending topics instead of actively engaging with what is happening in their own neighbourhoods and cities.
By the end of the evening, the performance at Lamakaan concluded by turning the mirror inward, leaving the audience to contemplate their own roles in everyday society.
