NIMS Doctors Perform High-Risk Heart Procedure to Save 30-Year-Old Labourer

Doctors at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad have successfully performed a high-risk, minimally invasive heart procedure on a 30-year-old labourer from Telangana who was suffering from multiple severe cardiac conditions.

The patient was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, an enlarged pumping heart chamber, and a weakened heart muscle. To address the life-threatening condition, a cardiology team led by Professor O Sai Satish conducted an Electrophysiological Study (EPS) and Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) utilising advanced 3D mapping technology.

Using the 3D mapping system, the medical team pinpointed the exact origin of the irregular heartbeats, which was located directly adjacent to a main heart valve and a major coronary artery. Treating the weak spots carried significant risk, as any error could have caused damage to the vital blood vessels or the heart valve.

To ensure precision and safety, the specialists carefully mapped the patient's blood vessels using an angiogram. They then delivered targeted radiofrequency energy to neutralise the tiny area of heart tissue responsible for triggering the irregular cardiac rhythm.

Following the intervention, the patient experienced an uneventful recovery. Dr Satish stated that the patient tolerated the procedure well and post-procedure monitoring confirmed the total successful suppression of the irregular heartbeats.

The complex treatment was provided completely free of cost to the patient under the state government's Aarogyasri Scheme.
