Hyderabad's Bondada Engineering wins India's first grid-scale VRFB storage project

Hyderabad-based Bondada Engineering Limited announced on Monday, 20 July 2026, that it has secured a landmark order from NTPC Renewable Energy Limited. The contract tasks the Hyderabad company with developing a 100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS) at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat.

This project represents India’s first and largest grid-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery storage system. The development marks a major milestone for Bondada Engineering Limited as the company makes its official foray into next-generation Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) technologies.

To execute the project, Bondada Engineering Limited is partnering with Delectrik Systems Pvt Ltd, who will serve as the technology partner. In addition to the initial setup and development of the 100 MWh system, the contract also mandates that Bondada Engineering will provide 10 years of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) services for the facility.

The primary objective of the VRFB storage system is to support the integration of renewable energy into India's national grid. The project leverages advanced Vanadium Redox Flow Battery technology. According to the company, this specific technology offers several key advantages over conventional Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery systems, making it highly suitable for grid-scale energy storage.

Rear Admiral R Sreenivas, VSM (Retd), Group Chief Executive Officer of Bondada Engineering Limited, expressed his outlook on the contract. He stated that the award represents a defining milestone in the growth journey of Bondada Engineering. He added that the company is proud to partner with NTPC Renewable Energy Limited to deliver this landmark project for the country.

The project establishes a new benchmark for energy storage in India, introducing large-scale VRFB technology to help stabilize and support the national grid as renewable energy sources continue to expand.
