Hyderabad Police seize drugs worth Rs 22.17 crore and register 563 cases

The Hyderabad City Police registered 563 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and seized banned narcotics worth Rs 22.17 crore during a year-long crackdown between June 2025 and June 2026, with the Jubilee Hills Zone recording the highest concentration of 116 cases. The sustained anti-drug campaign, conducted by Law and Order teams alongside the Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW), aimed to dismantle supply networks and curb substance abuse across the Hyderabad Commissionerate.

According to police data, the Shamshabad Zone recorded 30 cases during the same period. The largest share of the seized contraband was ganja, with officers confiscating 2,513 kg valued at Rs 12.56 crore.

The police also seized 55.3 litres of hash oil worth Rs 6.91 crore, 1,626 grams of MDMA valued at Rs 1.62 crore, and 129 grams of cocaine worth Rs 64.50 lakh. Other recovered substances included 120 grams of heroin valued at Rs 24 lakh, 570 LSD blots worth Rs 17.10 lakh, and 220 grams of opium.

As part of the drive, more than 1,100 personnel executed a major cordon and search initiative named 'Operation Thunderbolt' in the Mangar Basti area, which falls under the Habeebnagar police station limits. This specific operation led to the seizure of ganja and illicit liquor.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar stated that similar operations would continue in coordination with State and Central agencies, including the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), and EAGLE.

In addition to enforcement, H-NEW expanded its drug screening measures for suspected offenders and consumers. Of the 1,550 individuals tested, 421 returned positive results. Rather than focusing solely on punitive measures, the police referred these drug users to Gandhi Hospital, the Erragadda Institute of Mental Health, and various rehabilitation centres for counselling and medical treatment.
