Heavy Rain Lashes Hyderabad and Telangana Districts as Kotapally Records 12.4 cm

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Hyderabad, including Banjara Hills and Shamshabad, from the evening of Monday, July 20, 2026, to the afternoon of Tuesday, July 21, 2026. The downpour brought down temperatures across the region, providing much-needed relief to residents from the prevailing warm and humid weather conditions.

According to data released by the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), the rainfall remained localized and varied in intensity across different neighbourhoods. Shamshabad recorded the highest rainfall in the Hyderabad area with 3.4 cm.

Other areas in and around the city also registered significant rainfall. Mamidipalli and Kongarkalan both recorded 3 cm of rain, followed by Banjara Hills with 2.3 cm. Hafeezpet recorded 2.2 cm, Madhapur saw 2.1 cm, and West Maredpally received 2 cm. Miyapur and Chandanagar each recorded 1.9 cm of rainfall. While the heaviest showers fell overnight, light localized rain of low intensity continued in a few parts of the city on Tuesday afternoon.

Beyond the capital, heavy rainfall was reported across several districts of Telangana during the same period. The highest rainfall in the state was recorded in Kotapally of Mancherial district, which received 12.4 cm of rain.

Other areas in Mancherial district also saw heavy downpours, including Jankapur with 12.3 cm, Tandur with 12 cm, and Devulawada with 11.3 cm. In Peddapalli district, Kamanpur recorded 10.9 cm of rain. Venkatapur in Mulugu district registered 10.4 cm, while Peddampet in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district recorded 9.6 cm.

Prior to the downpour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a weather forecast on July 20. The IMD predicted light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places in Hyderabad and its surrounding areas on July 21, along with generally cloudy skies over the city.
