Global Chess League launches Road2GCL initiative in Hyderabad ahead of Season 4

On Monday, July 20, 2026, the Global Chess League (GCL) announced the return of its community engagement initiative, 'Road2GCL', during an event in Hyderabad. The initiative serves as a buildup to Season 4 of the league, which is scheduled to take place in Bengaluru from September 3 to 14, 2026.

The GCL is a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and FIDE. The 'Road2GCL' programme aims to connect chess players, clubs, schools, creators, and fans through a series of phase-wise rollouts featuring competitions, community events, and collaborations over the coming weeks.

At the center of the initiative is the 'Road2GCL Contenders' competition. This tournament offers aspiring chess players a multi-stage qualification pathway to earn a chance to compete against established Global Chess League stars in a special showdown. In its inaugural edition, the competition saw Jose Martinez win the Open category, WGM Mai Narva win the Women's category, and IM Faustino Oro secure the Under-21 title.

Additionally, the initiative features 'Shining Stars', which brings community-led chess activities directly to local clubs and educational institutions. Another component, 'Road2GCL Creators', is a creator-led programme designed to introduce new audiences to the journey leading up to the main tournament.

Gourav Rakshit, Commissioner of the Global Chess League, stated that the league was created to reimagine how chess is experienced throughout the season. He noted that the initiative reflects this vision by creating opportunities for people of all ages and skill levels to engage with the game, connect with the wider chess community, and join the journey to Season 4.

The upcoming Season 4 in Bengaluru will feature 36 of the world's leading Grandmasters competing across six franchises. Notably, reigning World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen is set to return to the league, marking his first time competing in India. The season will also feature the league debut of reigning FIDE Women's World Cup champion Divya Deshmukh.
