COVA Urges Telangana Schools to Adopt Citizenship Program, Plans 3,000-School Expansion

The Confederation of Voluntary Associations (COVA) on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, urged educational institutions across Telangana to adopt and implement the Compassionate Citizenship Program to foster moral education, social awareness, and civic accountability among young students.

The Compassionate Citizenship Program, which engages school students from across all districts of Telangana, was initially implemented on a pilot basis by COVA. The initiative focuses on experiential learning, training children to analyze critical social issues such as elder care, environmental protection, and plastic-free campuses, and helping them formulate practical community solutions.

A multi-year statistical evaluation of the program documented measurable gains among participants. Mazher Hussain of the COVA Peace Network stated that the assessment showed significant improvements in students' overall social awareness, strong enhancements in environmental consciousness, and a demonstrable rise in civic responsibility and community participation.

Following the positive impact assessments and successful outcomes from the early rollout phases, organizers have projected a major scale-up of the initiative. Authorities plan to expand the Compassionate Citizenship Program to 3,000 schools across districts in Telangana, integrating it deeply into formal value education frameworks.

In a press release, COVA stated that expanding the program is vital for equipping students with social advocacy skills, transforming them into empathetic citizens, and driving grassroots community development across the state.
