Chilkur Balaji Priests Perform Varuna Japam At Osmansagar To Invoke Rain

The Chilkur Balaji Temple management organized the traditional Vedic rain-invoking ritual, Varuna Japam, at the Osmansagar reservoir on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Tuesday, July 21.

The ritual, which took place at the water body also known as Gandipet Lake, was held from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM. The ceremony was conducted to invoke abundant monsoon rains, revive agriculture, and replenish drying rivers and reservoirs across Telangana.

The mass prayer was held for the welfare of society, aiming to bring copious monsoon rains to the region, save withering crops, and fill up the state's drying water bodies.

During the ritual, Vedic pandits and temple priests stood in waist-deep water within the Gandipet Lake reservoir while performing the prayers. The group of priests was led by C S Lakshmi Narasimhan.

Additionally, a group of ritwiks (priests) led by Dr. V Srirama Ghanapati of Vedabhavanam continuously recited the Varuna Japam. The prayers were sourced from the Taittiriya Samhita of the Vedas. The priests typically chanted these prayers 108 times during the ritual.

The prayers were chanted to appease Chilkur Balaji to ordain Varuna, the Hindu God of water and oceans, and Lord Indra, to bring rain to the region.

According to a press release from the temple management, the ritual is a traditional practice aimed at addressing agricultural distress and water shortages by invoking divine intervention.
