Centre Confirms Telangana Proposal for Indian Institute of Management in Hyderabad

The Union Ministry of Education has confirmed that it received a proposal from the Telangana government to establish an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Hyderabad.

The official confirmation was delivered on Monday in the Lok Sabha by the Union Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar.

The minister was responding to a specific question raised by Congress MP Mallu Ravi regarding the "Establishment of an Indian Institute of Management in Telangana." The proposal, if approved, would bring the first-ever IIM to the state.

Currently, Telangana is one of only seven states in India that does not have an IIM. Across the country, there are 22 IIMs functioning in 21 states. The other states currently operating without an IIM are Goa, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.

According to Dr. Majumdar, the Central government periodically establishes new institutions of national importance, including IIMs, across the country. He noted that these decisions are made after carefully considering regional balance and the availability of resources.

Data from the All-India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023–24 highlights the existing educational landscape of the state. Telangana currently hosts 2,070 higher education institutions. Of these, 604 institutions offer various management courses, which includes 20 universities, 570 colleges, and 14 standalone institutes.

Telangana is already home to several premier central government higher educational institutions. These include the University of Hyderabad, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal, the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) in Hyderabad, and the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) in Hyderabad.

Additionally, the Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University was established by the central government at Mulugu in 2023. The proposed IIM in Hyderabad would join this list of premier national institutions if the central government approves the state's request.
