New to Hyderabad? The no-nonsense first-timer's guide
Where to live, how to get around, what the weather actually does, and the unwritten rules nobody tells you.
So you just landed in Hyderabad. Welcome to the city that runs on biryani, Irani chai, and an almost unreasonable amount of chill. Here's the stuff that actually matters.
The vibe
Hyderabad is two cities stitched together. There's the Old City around Charminar, all 400-year-old monuments and bangle markets, and there's the new west side, Gachibowli and HITEC City, which is basically glass towers and tech campuses. Most newcomers land somewhere in the middle and bounce between both.
Where people actually live
If you work in tech, the west (Gachibowli, Madhapur, Kondapur, Financial District) keeps your commute sane. If you want character, cafes and nightlife, Jubilee Hills and Banjara Hills are the cool-kid zone. Secunderabad is the older, calmer twin city up north and quietly underrated.
Getting around
The Hyderabad Metro is genuinely good and dodges the traffic, but it doesn't reach everywhere. Autos and app cabs fill the gaps. Pro move: keep some change, and never accept the first auto price.
Weather, honestly
It's hot from March to June, properly hot. The monsoon rolls in around June and the city turns green and gorgeous. October to February is the sweet spot: warm days, cool evenings, perfect for being outside.
Unwritten rules
- Bun maska and Irani chai is a whole personality. Try it at a proper Irani cafe.
- Sunday is for biryani. Order early.
- Everyone says "tension le mat" and they mean it. The pace is relaxed on purpose.
