Yash Raj Films Alters Alia Bhatt Starrer Alpha Storyline to Focus on Assassin Origin

Yash Raj Films has altered the creative direction of its upcoming action thriller "Alpha," starring Alia Bhatt, shifting the plot to focus on the origin story of her character as an assassin rather than an India-Pakistan spy mission. The film, produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Shiv Rawail, is scheduled to hit theatres on July 10, 2026.
Sources associated with the project dismissed recent reports that the film would revolve around an Indian and Pakistani agent teaming up for a joint intelligence operation. Instead, the narrative will deliberately avoid themes of India-Pakistan friendship or diplomatic reconciliation. The story is instead expected to highlight India's determination and strength in confronting its enemies independently.
The storyline will follow Bhatt's character, who is depicted not as a spy but as an assassin. Raised from childhood to become a highly skilled killing machine, she operates as a dangerous lone operative who has been trained to trust no one. Her difficult upbringing and personal journey will form the emotional and action-packed core of the film.
This creative shift represents a strategic move by producer Aditya Chopra to expand the Yash Raj Films (YRF) Spy Universe with more unconventional and morally complex characters. The change in strategy was reportedly prompted by the success of the film "Dhurandhar."
In addition to Bhatt, "Alpha" stars Sharvari, Bobby Deol, and Anil Kapoor. While the film was previously expected to release on July 3, 2026, the makers officially locked a new release date of July 10, 2026, creating fresh buzz in trade circles.
The YRF Spy Universe originally began with "Ek Tha Tiger," "Tiger Zinda Hai," and "War" in 2019. While the first three films worked as individual hits before YRF connected them under one action franchise, later entries like "Pathaan" brought in big box office numbers but did not leave the same impact as the earlier films. The franchise has also faced recent setbacks with films like "Tiger 3" and "War 2."
Despite these setbacks, Yash Raj Films has demonstrated strong confidence in "Alpha." The production house reportedly turned down a massive direct-to-OTT offer from Netflix to stream the female-led thriller directly on its platform. According to reports, the streaming giant offered around Rs 215 crore for the exclusive digital rights, which YRF rejected.
