Villagers in Nagarkurnool Exhume and Burn Buried Body to Bring Rain, Police Say

Villagers in Kodonipally of Padara mandal in Nagarkurnool district exhumed the body of a deceased man and cremated it in the belief that the act would bring rainfall, police said on Sunday.

According to police officials, the man had died three months ago, after which his family members had buried his body. However, facing a lack of rain and drying crops, local villagers turned to superstition and sought guidance from tantriks to end the dry spell.

Acting on the advice of the tantriks, the villagers brought an earthmover to the burial site to exhume the remains. After digging up the body, the group assembled firewood to construct a funeral pyre, doused the structure with petrol, and cremated the corpse.

Police authorities intervened following the incident and detained several individuals who took part in the exhumation and burning. During initial questioning, those involved reportedly told investigators that cremating the buried body was intended to bring rain to save their parched agricultural fields.

Police confirmed that a case has been registered and a detailed probe is currently underway. Officials added that the names and identities of the suspects will be officially disclosed once the investigation is complete.
