Varun Dhawan's Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Releases in Hyderabad to Mixed Reviews

The romantic-comedy film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, starring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, and Pooja Hegde, released in theatres across Hyderabad on June 5, 2026. Directed by David Dhawan and produced by Ramesh Taurani, the film opened to a mixed reception, with viewers finding it entertaining in portions but lacking impact during key emotional sequences.
The story follows Jaswinder "Jass" Ahuja (played by Varun Dhawan), a wedding photographer who falls in love with and marries Baani (Mrunal Thakur). Five years later, Baani applies for a divorce because Jass wants children while she wants to focus on her professional career. Jass subsequently moves to London and begins dating Preet (Pooja Hegde), only for Baani to re-enter his life, creating a chaotic and comedic situation.
Audiences noted that the second half of the film provides decent entertainment, particularly after an interval twist where the protagonist struggles to manage his relationships with both women. Varun Dhawan's energetic performance and comedic timing were highlighted as major strengths of the movie. Specific comedy sequences, including hospital scenes featuring Rakesh Bedi and Chunky Panday, as well as a house sequence with Maniesh Paul, successfully generated laughs.
However, the film faced criticism for its weak first half and an ordinary romantic track in the opening half-hour. Critics also pointed out that the climax undermined the main character's motivations, making him appear desperate rather than sympathetic. Additionally, the movie's emotional moments failed to land, and the soundtrack—contributed to by multiple music directors—was largely deemed underwhelming, with only a single remix song making a positive impression.
The film features cinematography by Ayananka Bose and editing by Ritesh Soni. Despite its flaws, its crisp runtime prevented significant dull stretches for viewers during its theatrical run.
