Undertrial Rohit Pawar dies after suicide attempt at Cherlapally Central Prison

A 20-year-old undertrial prisoner, identified as Rohit Pawar, died at Gandhi Hospital on Wednesday after allegedly attempting suicide inside the Cherlapally Central Prison in Hyderabad. Pawar had been under judicial remand and lodged at the Cherlapally jail for approximately one-and-a-half months.

The deceased was facing legal proceedings in connection with a rape case. The case against him had been registered at the Jawaharnagar Police Station in May of this year, leading to his subsequent arrest and detention at the central prison.

According to prison sources, Pawar allegedly attempted to end his life by hanging himself inside a bathroom located within the prison premises. The incident was discovered by the Cherlapally Central Prison staff, who immediately took action and shifted him to Gandhi Hospital for emergency medical care.

Pawar was admitted to the hospital, where Gandhi Hospital authorities and medical staff provided treatment. However, he ultimately succumbed while undergoing treatment at the medical facility.

Following his death, some initial reports had circulated suggesting that Pawar had passed away a day after being released from prison on bail. Cherlapally Central Prison authorities later refuted these claims and clarified the details of the incident. The prison officials confirmed that Pawar had attempted suicide while still in judicial custody and subsequently died during his treatment at Gandhi Hospital.

Local police and prison authorities have launched an official investigation into the incident. The authorities are currently trying to determine the exact circumstances and factors that led to the suicide attempt inside the prison bathroom.
