Undertrial Prisoner Dies After Suicide Attempt at Chanchalguda Central Prison

A 30-year-old undertrial prisoner died on Monday after attempting suicide at Chanchalguda Central Prison in Hyderabad.
The deceased has been identified as Kandi Sagar, a native of Nizamabad. Prison authorities reported that Sagar was discovered struggling inside a washroom at the facility around 8:30 am, shortly after the morning roll call was conducted.
Prison staff immediately shifted him to Osmania General Hospital for emergency medical treatment, but he succumbed and was declared dead en route to the hospital.
Sagar had been lodged at the Chanchalguda facility since July 25, following his arrest in connection with a rash and negligent driving case registered under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Following the incident, the Dabeerpura police registered a case under Section 196 of the BNS, which mandates specific legal protocols and inquiries in cases involving custodial deaths.
Sagar's body has been preserved at the Osmania General Hospital mortuary. An investigative team from the Dabeerpura police station will inspect the scene of the incident inside the prison premises. Medical professionals are scheduled to perform a videographed post-mortem examination, the findings of which will be submitted directly to the court as part of the formal inquiry.
