Two-Year-Old Seizure-Free After Epilepsy Surgery at Secunderabad Hospital

A two-year-old girl from Bhongir has become seizure-free after undergoing advanced epilepsy surgery at Yashoda Hospitals in Secunderabad, doctors announced in a press release.

The child, Vagdevi, had been suffering from severe seizures almost daily since she was six months old. Despite receiving treatment with multiple anti-seizure medications for nearly a year, the medicines failed to control her frequent episodes. The prolonged condition also led to developmental delays affecting her speech, physical abilities, and cognitive milestones.

Following detailed diagnostic scans, medical teams identified a small lesion in the left temporal region of her brain, situated close to the amygdala and hippocampus, as the likely root cause of the frequent seizures. A specialised paediatric neuro team was assembled to manage her condition.

Dr R Ayyadurai, Senior Neurosurgeon at Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad, explained that the medical team conducted an anterior temporal lobectomy to treat the condition. During the procedure, surgeons successfully removed the lesion, targeting the abnormal tissue responsible for triggering the seizures.

Following the surgical intervention, the child became seizure-free.

Dr N Varsha Monica Reddy, Senior Paediatric Neurologist at Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad, emphasised the need for early medical attention in paediatric cases where medications prove ineffective, noting that parents should not delay in consulting epilepsy specialists if seizures are not controlled through standard drug treatments.
