Two-Year-Old Girl Cured of Severe Seizures After Brain Surgery in Secunderabad

A two-year-old girl from Bhongir has become completely seizure-free following advanced brain surgery at Yashoda Hospitals in Secunderabad. The toddler had been experiencing severe seizures nearly every day since she was six months old.

The recurrent episodes had persisted despite treatment with multiple anti-seizure medications for nearly a year. In addition to the daily seizures, the condition was linked to developmental delays in the child's speech, physical growth, and cognitive abilities.

The child was brought to the hospital on July 26 for an extensive pre-surgical evaluation. Diagnostic evaluations, including brain MRI and PET-CT scans, revealed a small abnormal lesion in the left temporal region of her brain, situated close to the amygdala and hippocampus. Medical specialists determined that this abnormal tissue was the primary source triggering her seizures.

Dr. N. Varsha Monica Reddy, a senior paediatric neurologist at the hospital, noted that controlling seizures early in life is critical because a developing brain possesses a high degree of neuroplasticity. Following the assessment, the girl underwent an anterior temporal lobectomy performed by senior neurosurgeon Dr. R. Ayyadurai, who successfully removed the abnormal lesion responsible for the condition.

A post-operative electroencephalogram (EEG) confirmed that the abnormal electrical brain activity present prior to the surgery had disappeared completely. The girl recovered well following the procedure, suffered no further seizures, and was discharged from the hospital within a week.
