Two Workers Killed as Illegal Multi-Storey Building Collapses in Kondapur

Two migrant workers died and a 75-year-old ex-serviceman suffered injuries after an under-construction seven-storied building collapsed at Anjaiah Nagar in Kondapur on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as K Umesh, 34, and Mopath, 42, both tile workers from Madhya Pradesh. Their bodies were recovered during rescue operations conducted by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) and fire department personnel. The injured senior citizen, who was inside an adjoining building, was rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries to his head and limbs caused by falling debris.
The collapse occurred around 1 pm when the narrow structure, built on a 50-square-yard plot and encroaching on a box drain, came crashing down. The structure fell onto two neighbouring buildings, damaging the facade of an apartment, an external staircase wall, and a portion of Jayadarshini Society’s C Block. Following the incident, nearly 25 families are expected to be temporarily relocated.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Madhapur) Ch Sreedhar confirmed that the building was owned by Syed Sajid and contracted to Khaja Moinuddin, adding that the entire structure had been built without permissions. Police have registered a case against Sajid under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The owner is currently absconding.
Cyberabad Municipal Commissioner G Srijana said municipal authorities had previously ordered the illegal construction to halt, but the owner resumed work on Friday. Explaining the collapse, HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath noted that ongoing earth excavation for a foundation in the neighbourhood had compromised the structural stability of the illegal building.
Rescue operations were carried out by police, municipal, revenue, and HYDRAA teams, supported by approximately 25 NDRF personnel who deployed K9 search dogs to comb through the rubble.
