Two-Month-Old Infant Undergoes Robotic Pyeloplasty in Nallagandla

Doctors at Citizens Specialty Hospital in Nallagandla, Hyderabad, have successfully performed a robotic pyeloplasty on a two-month-old infant, making the child one of the youngest patients in India to undergo a robot-assisted surgical procedure performed by a paediatric specialist.

The operation was conducted by Prabhu Karunakaran, a consultant paediatric urologist at the hospital. The procedure was carried out to correct a condition affecting the infant’s kidney and ureter, with the objective of restoring normal urine flow.

The medical team opted for the minimally invasive robotic procedure instead of traditional open surgery. Following the successful completion of the operation, the infant experienced a swift recovery and was discharged from the hospital two days after the surgery.

Robotic-assisted pyeloplasty offers multiple advantages over conventional open surgical interventions. Key benefits include significantly smaller incisions, reduced blood loss during the operation, less postoperative pain, and a faster recovery period. Specialists note that these advantages can be particularly critical and impactful when operating on infants and young children.

The completion of this procedure further expands the hospital's portfolio in specialised paediatric robotic interventions. In 2023, Mallikarjuna Reddy performed robotic surgery on a 21-day-old infant at Citizens Specialty Hospital.

This latest procedure marks the hospital’s second milestone involving one of the youngest paediatric surgical patients in the region, with the two landmark operations completed by different surgical specialists.
