Two Migrant Workers Killed in Seven-Storey Building Collapse at Gachibowli

An illegally constructed seven-storey apartment building collapsed on Saturday in Anjaiah Nagar, Gachibowli, killing two migrant workers. The incident has drawn attention to the quiet residential pocket, which has long served as a major center for affordable hostels and paying guest accommodations.
Nestled in the heart of Gachibowli, Anjaiah Nagar is situated within a radius of 1 km to 5 km from key employment avenues and commercial hubs, including Cyber Towers, IKEA, Tech Mahindra, and the Financial District. As multinational IT and ITES companies, shopping malls, multiplexes, and commercial establishments expanded across the IT corridor, the locality became a preferred residential base for the workforce.
Property owners in the neighborhood carved out small sharing accommodations to house migrant workers arriving from other districts and states. According to local residents, these budget hostels accommodate a wide range of occupants, including students, housekeeping staff, sales workers, and laborers, with most places offering affordable lodging and dinner.
The settlement has historical roots in government welfare initiatives. Anjaiah Nagar was named after the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister T Anjaiah, who allotted government land plots measuring between 50 and 100 square yards to poor families during his tenure. A local builder stated that these plots were subsequently regularized during the administration of the then Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy under the building regularisation scheme.
