TSCS Hyderabad Explores Gene Therapy Access for Thalassemia Patients Across India

The Hyderabad-based Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) has announced efforts to bring gene therapy access to thalassemia patients across India, following an international study visit to examine advanced treatment infrastructure.

As part of the initiative, a delegation from the society traveled to Thailand and other countries recognized as leading destinations for thalassemia gene therapy. The primary objective of the mission was to evaluate medical protocols, assess specialized facility requirements, and explore potential collaboration opportunities with international experts.

The delegation partnered with senior bone marrow transplant specialist Dr. Sunil Bhat for the visit. Key representatives from TSCS included Society President Dr. Chandrakant Agarwal, Chief Medical Research Officer and Secretary Dr. Suman Jain, Vice-President Dr. Naresh Rathi, and senior scientist Dr. Nishant Mittal.

During the visit, the team engaged in discussions to study how gene therapy, an emerging and potentially transformative medical solution for thalassemia, could be adapted and made accessible for patients across the country.

TSCS stated that it intends to work closely with international partners and specialists to lay the groundwork for introducing gene therapy options within India.
