TGSPDCL to Build Substation Under Nayani Narasimha Reddy Flyover in Musheerabad

Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) officials inspected a proposed site between Pillar Nos. 63 and 64 beneath the Nayani Narasimha Reddy steel flyover near the Musheerabad bus depot on Monday to establish a 33/11 kV indoor substation. The initiative aims to tackle rising electricity demand and land scarcity in Greater Hyderabad by using vacant spaces under flyovers and steel bridges.

TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Jitesh V Patil and Director (Projects) V. Shivaji reviewed the site layout, underground cable routes, 33 kV incoming supply, and 11 kV outgoing feeders. The discom plans to develop the Musheerabad facility as a model unmanned substation integrated with Remote Terminal Units (RTU) for remote monitoring and operations.

According to Patil, acquiring land for a conventional substation in Greater Hyderabad costs between Rs 8 crore and Rs 10 crore. Constructing the compact indoor substation under the flyover is estimated to cost between Rs 10 crore and Rs 12 crore in total, significantly lowering land acquisition expenses while providing a reliable power supply.

Once operational, the new substation will reduce the operational load on five existing 33/11 kV substations currently handling heavy loads in Musheerabad and surrounding areas. Based on the performance of this model, TGSPDCL plans to assess technical feasibility for similar indoor substations under other flyovers in land-constrained parts of the city.

Officials stated that public safety and structural protection will be given highest priority. Prescribed electrical isolation, earthing, insulation, and protection systems will be installed to prevent the flyover's steel structure from exposure to electrical potential. The facility will be commissioned only after technical supervision, testing, and safety verifications are completed.
