TGSPDCL Plans Indoor Power Substation Under Musheerabad Flyover

Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) Chairman and Managing Director Jitesh V. Patil on Monday inspected a proposed site beneath the steel flyover in Musheerabad to set up an indoor 33/11 kV power substation. The initiative aims to overcome land constraints and strengthen the distribution network in central Hyderabad.
The site inspection took place between pillars 63 and 64 near the Musheerabad bus depot. Patil was accompanied by Director (Projects & IT) V. Shivaji, Chief Engineer (Metro Zone) Karunakar Babu, Superintending Engineer Ramesh, and other senior officials.
The proposed facility will house two 8 MVA transformers and indoor switchgear, with provisions for eight 11 kV feeders. Four of these feeders will be commissioned in the initial phase. Designed as an unmanned, remotely monitored facility, the substation will incorporate Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) integration, XLPE underground cabling, ring main units, and automated protection systems.
Guided by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the project follows recommendations from a five-member technical committee that evaluated construction, safety, and maintenance parameters for utilizing spaces under flyovers and steel bridges. Once completed, the unit will relieve operational loads on five existing 33/11 kV substations and improve supply reliability for residents in Jawaharnagar, Vidyanagar, Boudhnagar, LN Nagar, and the City Central Library area.
To prevent outages, the substation will have dual power feeds. The primary feed will connect to the 132/33 kV Fever Hospital EHT substation through approximately 1.5 km of underground cable, while a backup feed will run from the Chilakalguda–Narayanguda system via the Industrial Area substation.
Officials noted that traditional outdoor substations often incur land acquisition costs ranging between ₹8 crore and ₹10 crore. By contrast, the indoor Musheerabad substation is estimated to cost ₹10 crore to ₹12 crore in total while eliminating land purchase hurdles. Patil instructed engineers to enforce strict safety norms regarding electrical isolation, earthing, and insulation, noting that successful implementation could see similar projects expanded to other parts of the city.
