TGSPDCL Introduces Battery-Powered Tree Pruners in Banjara Hills to Prevent Outages

On Monday, TGSPDCL and STIHL representatives held a demonstration of new battery-powered professional tree pruners and bucket ladder vehicles near Sreenikethan in Aurora Colony, Banjara Hills. The initiative aims to make tree trimming operations near 11 kV power lines safer, faster, and more environmentally friendly to prevent power disruptions during monsoons and heavy winds.

During the demonstration, officials showcased the performance, safety standards, ease of maintenance, and environmental benefits of the battery-powered tools. A live comparison was also presented between the new battery-powered equipment and conventional petrol-powered tools.

The newly procured equipment consists of international-grade professional tools engineered to German standards and manufactured in Austria. TGSPDCL's procurement package includes the tools, batteries, chargers, warranties, training, after-sales support, and spare parts.

In Hyderabad, tree branches frequently come into contact with 11 kV power lines during monsoons and high winds. This contact often causes feeder trippings, power interruptions, snapped conductors, and damage to electrical equipment. The utility hopes to mitigate these risks through proactive trimming.

Previously, tree trimming required significant manpower and time, forcing personnel to climb trees and use manual tools. The new battery-powered pruners allow staff to remove branches safely from the ground or from a safe distance, minimizing physical strain and the risk of electric shocks, falls, and other workplace accidents.

By using these advanced tools, the utility can complete trimming work in less time with fewer personnel. This efficiency is expected to reduce shutdown durations, enable faster restoration of power supply to consumers, and allow maintenance teams to cover more locations in a single day.

Furthermore, the proactive trimming of branches is expected to reduce emergency maintenance costs, prevent revenue losses from frequent interruptions, and protect valuable electrical assets such as transformers, conductors, and insulators. The lightweight equipment can also be easily transported and used in narrow streets, rural areas, and difficult terrains.

TGSPDCL is among the first power distribution utilities in India to adopt this professional-grade, environmentally friendly battery-powered equipment on a large scale.
