TGPCB and IIT Hyderabad to Host Battery Waste Workshop in Sanathnagar on August 19

The Telangana Pollution Control Board (TGPCB), in association with IIT Hyderabad and with support from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), will organise a one-day workshop on battery waste management and the recovery of critical minerals at Sanathnagar on August 19.

The workshop is being conducted as part of the pre-event activities leading up to the 10th World Circular Economy Forum. The event aims to bring together researchers, industry representatives, and regulatory authorities to discuss comprehensive strategies for battery waste management and the extraction of vital materials.

Key discussions during the workshop will centre on the recovery of critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel from spent batteries. Technical sessions planned for the day will address battery recycling technologies, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations, and the operational challenges encountered by the recycling industry.

Additionally, a panel discussion will examine methods for recovering critical minerals and rare earth elements specifically from spent lithium-ion batteries.

Participants in the workshop include representatives from the Telangana Pollution Control Board, CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), Chennai, CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI), IIT Hyderabad, Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd., and HBL Power Systems Ltd.
