TGERC Approves Licence For Telangana Rythu Power Distribution Company

HYDERABAD — The Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC) on Saturday approved the distribution licence for the newly formed Telangana Rythu Power Distribution Company Limited (TGRPDCL) in Hyderabad. This approval paves the way for the establishment of the state's third power distribution company, which will be dedicated to agricultural and water supply consumers. The commission has directed the new discom to commence its operations within four months from the date of the order.
The Telangana state government had previously constituted TGRPDCL in March this year. The creation of this new entity represents a restructuring of the existing government-owned distribution companies. According to the commission, the reorganization is intended to bring a dedicated focus, better energy accounting, and improved service to farmers and allied water supply consumers.
In its official order, the TGERC made it clear that the restructuring process would not affect the existing benefits currently provided to farmers. The regulatory body directed TGRPDCL to continue providing free power to agricultural consumers in line with the state’s policy, both now and in the future. Additionally, the commission ruled out the implementation of individual metering on agricultural pump sets.
"The formation of TGRPDCL is a restructuring of the existing govt-owned distribution companies intended to bring dedicated focus, better energy accounting and improved service to farmers and allied water supply consumers. It does not alter the benefits presently available to them," the commission stated in its order.
The newly licensed discom is set to exclusively serve a specific range of consumers across the state. This includes agricultural consumers, lift irrigation schemes, the Mission Bhagiratha project, composite protected water supply schemes, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), and municipal water supply connections that have separate distribution transformers.
With the licence now officially approved, the management of TGRPDCL must work to meet the four-month rollout deadline to begin its commercial and distribution operations.
