Telangana Tourism Plans Development of Island in Kadam Project Backwaters

The Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation is planning to develop a scenic island located in the backwaters of the Kadam project in Nirmal district into a major tourism destination, with proposed attractions including a ropeway, boating facilities, and cottages for night stays.
The island is situated in Kadam mandal, surrounded by the villages of Dharmajipet, Revojipet, and Peddore. Nestled in the Sahyadri hills and downstream from the Kuntala waterfalls, the site lies approximately 750 meters from the Kadam project gates.
Srikanth Reddy, the in-charge district tourism officer for Nirmal, stated that a private agency acting on behalf of the tourism corporation recently visited the Kadam project to survey the area. The agency has proposed establishing several visitor facilities, including a ropeway to provide direct access to the island.
Previous efforts to develop the island as a tourist destination with boating facilities in 2016 did not make headway. Under the renewed proposal, authorities aim to facilitate island tourism modeled after popular sites such as Laknavaram Lake in Mulugu district. The plan includes developing accommodation and food facilities so tourists can opt for overnight stays.
Currently, tourists visiting the Kadam project can view the forested island from boats operated by the tourism department, but entry to the landmass is restricted. The dense forests on the island are known to house various medicinal plants. Local fishermen have also raised concerns in the past regarding boat movements damaging fishing nets installed around the island.
With growing interest in island tourism across the state, the proposed infrastructure aims to make the backwater destination accessible while introducing modern amenities for visitors.
