Telangana to Link Death Records with Voter Database to Update Electoral Rolls

HYDERABAD — Telangana is preparing to link its birth and death registration database with voter ID records to keep electoral rolls updated by automatically identifying and removing deceased electors after official verification.

Under the proposed mechanism, which is currently in its initial phase, death registration entries will be shared electronically with the voter database. Once officials complete the necessary verification, the deceased individual's details will be removed from the electoral roll. An official from the Telangana Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office stated that the initiative is scheduled to be rolled out across the state in a couple of months.

Currently, election authorities rely on physical field visits by booth-level officers to identify deceased voters and remove their names from the rolls. Family members of the deceased also submit Form 7 applications to request name deletions from the voter list.

The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has categorised 9,22,229 voters as deceased across the state. Hyderabad recorded the highest number of deceased electors at 1,56,392, followed by Rangareddy district with 88,647 and Medchal-Malkajgiri district with 72,314.

According to official data as of June 10, 2026, Telangana had a total electorate of 3,38,26,448 electors. Out of this total, 73,39,235 voters were placed under the Absent, Shifted, Death, and Double votes (ASD) category. A total of 2,64,87,213 voters submitted their enumeration forms as part of the SIR exercise.

The revision process also uncovered widespread discrepancies across the state. Anomalies such as mismatched names and incorrect ages, compared against the previous SIR, were found in the enumeration forms of 60,50,918 voters. Additionally, 32,36,659 electors were unable to link themselves to the 2002 SIR list.
