Telangana to Launch Homestay Scheme Allowing Homeowners to Host Tourists

The Telangana state government is set to open a new avenue for local families to earn from the tourism economy through the launch of a dedicated homestay scheme. The initiative will allow homeowners across Telangana to host tourists directly within their residences.

The state tourism department is preparing to invite applications from eligible homeowners across all districts for the official registration and classification of homestays. These operational guidelines have been issued a year after the Telangana Tourism Policy was first announced. The primary objective of the program is to decentralize tourism beyond major cities and traditional commercial hotel networks by enabling everyday households to operate as micro-entrepreneurs.

To support participating homeowners, the government is adopting a trust-based approach centered on the principles of ease of doing business. Under this model, the state government will act primarily as a facilitator and promoter. Department officials announced that all registration applications will be processed and disposed of within a strict timeline of 30 working days. Upon approval, each homestay registration will remain valid for a duration of two years.

State officials highlighted that tourism has become one of the fastest-growing contributors to local employment, entrepreneurship, cultural preservation, and balanced regional development. Implementing a statewide homestay network allows Telangana to significantly expand its accommodation capacity for visitors without incurring the substantial capital costs, land use requirements, and environmental burdens typically associated with commercial building construction.

In addition to expanding lodging infrastructure, the program is intended to enhance the cultural experience for travelers visiting the region. Homestays will offer visitors direct exposure to authentic Telangana cuisine, traditional handicrafts, local art forms, and regional festivals, integrating tourists directly into community life.
