Telangana to Introduce German and Japanese Classes to Prepare Youth for Global Jobs

On June 20, 2026, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy outlined a series of educational and skill development reforms in Hyderabad aimed at preparing the state's youth for global job markets and countering potential job displacement caused by artificial intelligence (AI).

Addressing students of the Young India Integrated Residential Schools, Young India Skills University, and Young India Sports University, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of learning foreign languages to improve employability in international markets.

As part of these reforms, the state government has created facilities to teach German and Japanese alongside English. The initiative aims to help local youth access employment opportunities abroad and secure more blue-collar jobs.

Additionally, the government is converting Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) into Advanced Technology Centres (ATCs) and has established a Skill University to identify and shape local talent.

Reddy, who retained the Education portfolio to personally oversee these reforms, stated that the rapid advancement of AI could potentially displace millions of workers, making proactive skill development critical for future employment.

Highlighting the government's spending priorities, Reddy announced that 8.5 percent of the state budget has been allocated to education. For the 2026-27 financial year, the state is spending Rs 26,600 crore on the education sector, which the government views as an investment in future generations.

The Young India Skill University-Telangana, established via an Assembly resolution in August 2024, currently offers more than 15 courses. These range from short-term certificate programmes to multi-year degree courses.

IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu added that the skill university was conceptualized to hone the skills of the local workforce, encourage innovation, and make young people eligible for higher-level jobs.

Furthermore, the state has set up the Young India Sports University to train youth across various disciplines with the goal of winning Olympic medals, positioning Telangana as a future education and sports hub.
