Telangana to install 862 CCTV cameras and 12 mobile She Toilets in Hyderabad

On Thursday, Director-General of Police (DGP) C.V. Anand announced that 862 additional CCTV cameras will be installed across the Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri police commissionerates, alongside the deployment of 12 new mobile ‘She Toilets’ in Hyderabad. The initiatives are part of the Telangana government’s Safe City project, which aims to make urban spaces safer for women, children, and pedestrians.

The decisions were finalized during a high-level review meeting chaired by DGP Anand. The meeting was attended by police officers, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) representatives, and officials from various other government departments to assess the technology-driven safety initiative.

Currently, the state has 2,306 active Safe City CCTV cameras. This includes 974 cameras in the Hyderabad Commissionerate limits, 574 in Cyberabad, and 758 in Malkajgiri limits. The newly planned 862 cameras will expand this network, with 452 designated for Hyderabad, 297 for Cyberabad, and 113 for Malkajgiri.

During the meeting, DGP Anand instructed officials to keep all cameras operational at all times. He emphasized that any gaps in surveillance could undermine the primary security objectives of the project.

In addition to surveillance, the meeting addressed public convenience and sanitation for women. Officials reported that 12 mobile She Toilets are currently operational in Hyderabad. To further assist women, DGP Anand directed that 12 more mobile toilets be deployed at major public locations.

The DGP also reviewed the operations of SHE Teams, Bharosa Centres, the HawkEye mobile application, and Safe Travel initiatives. He expressed appreciation for their contributions to women's security and urged all departments to coordinate closely so women can travel across the city without fear.

Road and pedestrian safety measures were also evaluated. Pedestrian signals have already been set up at 77 locations. Additionally, GHMC officials received directives to repair and maintain 404 existing traffic signals across the city to ensure they function properly.

The Safe City project integrates high-definition CCTV cameras, Integrated Command and Control Centres, Intelligent Traffic Management Systems, emergency response systems, and Artificial Intelligence to boost crime prevention and emergency response capabilities.
