Telangana Sets One-Year Target to Complete Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme

HYDERABAD — The Telangana government has placed the long-pending Devadula lift irrigation scheme on a fast track, setting a firm target to complete the project within the next one year. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed the state irrigation department to take focused action to ensure all pending works are executed without further delay.

To expedite under-construction irrigation projects across the state, the Chief Minister has assured a special financial package of Rs 6,000 crore, of which the Devadula scheme is a key beneficiary. Out of this allocated package, Rs 2,500 crore has already been released to support ongoing works.

Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad following a high-level review meeting on Tuesday, Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy stated that the government is fully committed to clearing all obstacles standing in the way of the project. He noted that the Chief Minister specifically instructed officials to pay special attention to the Devadula scheme and resolve all pending impediments on a priority basis.

The review meeting was attended by Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, Minister Danasari ‘Seethakka’ Anasuya, Chief Minister's adviser Vem Narender Reddy, and Member of Parliament P. Balram Naik. Several MLAs, including Kadiam Srihari, along with other public representatives from the project region and senior irrigation department officials, were also present to assess progress.

The Devadula lift irrigation scheme is designed to lift approximately 38 tmc ft of water from the Godavari river. Once completed, the project is slated to provide essential irrigation facilities to nearly six lakh acres of agricultural land spread across multiple districts, including Hanamkonda, Warangal, Karimnagar, Jangaon, Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, Suryapet, Siddipet, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Mulugu, and Jayashankar Bhupalpalli.

During Tuesday’s review, officials were further instructed to utilize all available pumping infrastructure to maximize the extraction of water from the Godavari river. The administration decided that the Devadula project system must be operated to ensure the maximum possible volume of water is pumped and conveyed directly to the designated reservoirs and command areas served by the network.
