Telangana Records 405 mm Rain Since June 1 as Monsoon Pauses in Hyderabad

Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana experienced a brief pause from heavy rains on Sunday, allowing residents and those celebrating Bonalu a quiet weekend. According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), the state has recorded 405 mm of rainfall against its normal average of 422.1 mm since the start of the monsoon season on June 1, leaving Telangana with a four per cent rainfall deficit.

Despite the four per cent deficit across the state, Telangana remains in the 'normal' category and has registered 40 rainy days since June 1. The cumulative rainfall deficit has eased considerably compared to the start of July, when the state had recorded an eight per cent shortfall with 123.4 mm of rain against the normal target of 134.7 mm.

In Hyderabad district, cumulative rainfall reached 303.1 mm against the normal figure of 332.8 mm since June 1. This places the capital district at a nine per cent deficit, with a total of 25 rainy days recorded so far. Similar to the state-wide trend, Hyderabad's deficit has also improved compared to the seven per cent deficit noted at the beginning of July.

The temporary lull on Sunday saw light passing showers across parts of Hyderabad as the monsoon entered a subdued phase. The break provided clear conditions for devotees taking part in the ongoing Bonalu celebrations across the city.

Looking ahead, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects the current quieter spell to continue without a complete dry-out. In its latest weather forecast, the IMD predicted moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places across Telangana between August 9 and August 15.

For Hyderabad specifically, the IMD has forecast partly cloudy conditions with light rain or drizzle over the next 24 to 48 hours. Additionally, strong surface winds blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 kmph are expected at isolated places across Telangana on August 9, 10, and 11, with no wind warnings issued for the period between August 12 and 15.
