Telangana Records 15 Percent Monsoon Deficit, Greater Hyderabad Down by 20 Percent

Telangana experienced a pronounced dry spell during the peak of the Southwest Monsoon, recording a 15 percent rainfall deficit between June 1 and August 28, 2026. Cumulative rainfall across the state dropped to 469.4 mm against the normal average of 551.6 mm, according to the latest weather data report from the Telangana Development Planning Society.

In Greater Hyderabad and surrounding urban areas, cumulative rainfall stood at 353.9 mm against the normal 443.7 mm, marking a 20 percent deficit.

Out of the 33 districts in Telangana, 16 have slipped into the deficient category, with shortfalls ranging from 20 percent to 59 percent. Another 16 districts remained in the normal category, while Kamareddy was the only district to register excess rainfall, posting a 20 percent surplus.

Hanumakonda recorded the lowest rainfall among all deficit districts with a 45 percent shortfall, followed by Warangal at 43 percent and Jangaon at 40 percent.

The month of August, which typically brings the highest rainfall during the monsoon season, closed on a dry note with a 33 percent deficit compared to its monthly average.

Due to subdued cloud cover and sparse rainfall, daytime temperatures remained elevated across several regions. Nalgonda recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 37 degrees Celsius.
