As the monsoon season crossed its halfway mark, Telangana recorded a cumulative rainfall deficit of 12 per cent, receiving 430.1 mm of rainfall against the normal 488.8 mm as of August 19. According to rainfall data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TSDPS), the performance of the monsoon has slowed considerably in August. The normal monthly rainfall for August stands at 215.8 mm, but the State received only 90.8 mm up to August 19, translating to a 31 per cent deficit for the month.
The season has seen fluctuating precipitation levels across the State. Monsoons began on a restrained note in June, recording 104.2 mm against the normal 130.3 mm, which marked a 12 per cent deficit. Rainfall activity rebounded in July, when the State received 224 mm against the normal 227.4 mm. By comparison, Telangana had logged approximately 600 mm of rainfall during the same period last year.
District-level data across the 33 districts in the State shows varying conditions. A total of 17 districts remain in the normal rainfall category. Kamareddy is the only district in the excess category, recording 23 per cent excess rainfall.
However, 15 districts have slipped into the deficient category. While Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Sangareddy stayed in the normal range, neighbouring Medchal-Malkajgiri and Yadadri Bhongir districts were among those classified as deficient.
