Telangana Recorded Nearly 70 Percent of India Coal Mine Accidents in 2025

Telangana accounted for nearly 70 percent of all serious coal mine accidents reported across India in 2025, raising significant concerns regarding safety practices in the state’s mining operations. According to official data recently tabled in the Lok Sabha by the Ministry of Mines, Telangana alone accounted for 80 of the 119 serious accidents recorded across nine coal-bearing states in the country during the year.

The safety record over the three-year span from 2023 to 2025 showed that the high accident rate was consistent. During this three-year period, the state recorded 233 out of the 355 serious coal mine accidents reported nationwide, representing nearly two-thirds of the country’s total count. Across those three years, the accidents in Telangana left 235 workers injured.

Data provided by the Ministry of Mines detailed the severe physical impact on the workforce. Workers involved in these mining accidents suffered injuries ranging from fractures to permanent physical impairment, as well as the complete loss of sight or hearing.

The ministry noted that these serious accidents were linked to a wide range of operational hazards in the mines. Among the identified causes were falls from height, the impact of flying objects, and incidents involving explosives. Other recorded causes included landslides, as well as mechanical failures such as the breakdown of ropes, chains, and suspension gear. The data also highlighted accidents involving heavy equipment and infrastructure, specifically dumpers, drilling machines, and power cables.

In addition to serious non-fatal injuries, Telangana recorded multiple fatal accidents over the same three-year period. In 2023, the state witnessed six deaths resulting from six separate accidents. Fatalities increased in 2024, with eight deaths reported in the state's coal mines. In 2025, three fatalities were recorded. The accumulated figures have brought attention to the ongoing workplace risks and safety measures in Telangana's coal mining industry.
