Telangana Police Team Attacked in Nanded; Theft Accused Recaptured

A theft accused who was freed by a mob that attacked a Telangana Police team in Maharashtra's Nanded district was recaptured on Monday afternoon following an extensive search operation.

The incident took place around 7.30 pm on Sunday near Gokulnagar in Kinwat tehsil of Nanded, according to a complaint lodged by sub-inspector Ramesh Parshuram Gokla of the Bazar Hatnur Police Station in Adilabad district.

The Telangana Police team had traced an autorickshaw, which was stolen from the jurisdiction of Bazar Hatnur Police Station, to the Chikhli area. Officers detained the suspect, identified as Shaikh Bakr alias Jafar Shaikh, in connection with the theft case.

While the accused was handcuffed and being placed into a private vehicle to be taken away, a large crowd of men and women gathered at the location and surrounded the police team. The mob attacked the police personnel, vandalised their vehicle, and forcefully freed the accused from custody.

As the situation escalated, the Telangana Police personnel fired several rounds in the air to disperse the gathering crowd.

Following the confrontation, an extensive search operation was launched, leading to the rearrest of Shaikh Bakr on Monday afternoon. Police have stated that an investigation is currently underway to determine the role of other individuals involved and the 50 to 60 people named in the complaint.
