Telangana Plans to Expand Golf Beyond Hyderabad to Boost Tourism

The Telangana government plans to expand golf beyond Hyderabad to promote tourism and generate employment across the State, Tourism and Culture Minister Jupally Krishna Rao announced on Saturday at the Hyderabad Golf Club.

Speaking at the announcement of the 12th edition of the Telangana Golconda Masters, a DP World Professional Golf Tour of India (DP World PGTI) event, Mr. Rao explained that golf could assist the state in drawing international visitors while creating direct and indirect jobs. He stated that promoting golf across the State would help highlight tourism destinations outside Hyderabad.

Mr. Rao noted that the Tourism Department is prepared to spend funds on promoting golf alongside other sports. He highlighted destinations around the Krishna river, Somasila, forest and hill regions, and other heritage sites as locations with strong potential for tourism development that the government aims to promote.

The upcoming Telangana Golconda Masters tournament is scheduled to run from September 1 to 4. The competition will feature 132 golfers competing for a prize purse of Rs 1 crore.

Former India cricket captain and PGTI president Kapil Dev was also present at the event. Mr. Dev supported the initiative to position India as a golf tourism destination and said the facility in Hyderabad deserved greater recognition. He commended the Hyderabad Golf Association for upgrading the course over the years and noted that the venue can play a key role in establishing Hyderabad and Telangana as golf tourism hubs.
